The health benefits of Acai – separating fact from fiction

As Açai has increased in popularity over the decade, much has been made of its superpowers and benefits for health and wellness. With so much conflicting information around, it is hard to determine fact from fiction, but there is some research we can go upon which does suggest that Açai is an excellent addition to a healthy, balanced diet. Here’s why:

Enormous benefits of eating Açai

Açai berries contain healthy fats, low amounts of sugar, and many trace minerals and plant compounds, including anthocyanins, which have anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties. In addition, this ingredient aids in weight loss and reducing cholesterol. It can help to reduce arthritis symptoms and detoxify and rejuvenate the entire body.

Açai is high in vitamin A, which is good for skin, calcium, bones, teeth, and fibre which helps digestion. Açai berries are also high in antioxidants which are very good for our bodies – they support disease prevention and eye health and help with brain function. They can help to reduce inflammation and support a healthy aging process.

Researchers are still conducting studies on Açai, so we will keep getting more information about the incredible health benefits of this berry. So far, since Açai’s introduction to the West, many doctors and nutritionists agree that there are plenty of ‘good’ reasons to include Açai in your diet.

How to incorporate Açai into your diet

Açai berries are native to the Amazon region, where they’re a staple food and are often consumed fresh and sometimes even cooked. They’re a deep purple colour with yellow pulp, and the seed itself is pretty big, which means the yield from each berry is relatively tiny.

Because the berries have a short shelf life and aren’t available outside of where they are grown, they are typically exported to countries like Australia as a frozen fruit purée, dried powder, or pressed juice.

Açai is dark purple and has an unusual taste, often described as blueberries mixed with dark chocolate. It is an ‘earthy’ type of flavour, but you can pair it with multiple accompaniments like bananas, nuts, seeds, and all types of seasonal fruits making a delicious smoothie or Açai bowl a great way to start the day.

A delicious and healthy start to the day!

Because Açai is high in dietary fibre, many people say that it is ‘filling’ for longer, which also helps them to avoid the mid-morning or mid-afternoon munchies, which can be a great benefit if you’re watching the calories, aiming to lose weight, or trying to take a much healthier approach to eat.

Most nutrition experts will tell you that you can have too much of a good thing! And that also includes Açai – it’s best to make sure you consume it as a part of a balanced diet and lifestyle.
